We’re a small team with big ideas and a passion for clay.

At the heart of Clay Center is our community of talented clay artists who bring passion, expertise, and years of hands-on experience to every class. Each instructor has their own unique artistic journey and specialized techniques, but they all share a common love for the transformative power of clay and a dedication to helping students discover their own creative potential.

Our teaching artists are committed to creating an inclusive, supportive environment where everyone can learn, experiment, and grow – whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced potter. They're here to guide, inspire, and support you every step of the way in our vibrant studio community.

Meet Our Teachers

Emily

Emily has been working with clay since 1996 — and no, that’s not a typo! A native of the desert Southwest, Emily earned her BFA in Sculpture from the University of Arizona before heading to the East Coast, where she completed her MFA in Ceramics at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

With a deep passion for hand building, Emily brings both skill and enthusiasm to her teaching. Her dream of opening a studio, building a creative community, and making art continues to drive her work every day.

Julia

Hi! I’m Julia, and I’m thrilled to join Clay Center Flagstaff! Originally from California, I’ve called Flagstaff home for five years. I’ve been working with clay since 2019 and have spent the last three years as a ceramic studio technician.

I’m currently finding the wheel is an opportunity to transform a lump of earth into something beautiful and functional. There is something magical about creating pieces with our own hands — each thrown pot carries a story and a touch of humanity that makes it more than just functional, but truly special.

Hailey

Hailey can usually be found at the wheel making practical items that can be used around the home. She particularly enjoys throwing lidded jars and coffee pour-over sets (and particularly dislikes cleaning up afterwards).

She’s taught various types of lessons throughout her life like snowboarding and piano lessons and loves the process of breaking down a skill and sharing it with others (putting that psychology degree to use!). When not getting muddy in her free time, Hailey works as a mental health therapist specializing in trauma treatment.

Lea

Hey I’m Lea! I have lived in AZ my whole life, and am in Flagstaff studying accounting at NAU. While I love to camp, snorkel, and kayak, I love ceramics even more. I have been getting my hands dirty with clay for five years now and teach workshops and kids classes at the Clay Center as of late!
