Visiting Artist Info

We’d love for you to come to make in our space and experience our clay community. If you want to know more about it, please read our FAQ and House Rules below.

To request access to sign up for sessions, please fill out the following information.

Visiting Artist Open Studio Service

  • Visiting artists must have prior experience taking a piece through the full ceramic process — forming, trimming, bisque firing, glazing, and glaze firing — before booking studio blocks. This isn't service for first-time clay work.

  • $40 for one session

    Packages can be purchased here.

    • $130 for four sessions ($32.50/session)

    • $220 for eight sessions ($27.50/session)

    All firing fees and use of studio tools/glazes are included.

  • Works in progress (WIP): store WIP on ware boards or bats, labeled with your name and the date on the single share shelf labeled for visiting artists. After 14 days, WIPs will be recycled.

    Work that’s been fired: must be picked up from the open studio shelf within 14 days of the date it was unloaded from the kiln. After 14 days, fired work will be removed unless previous arrangements were made.

  • Our paying studio artists get priority access to shared equipment. If you've booked a studio block and a studio artist needs the wheel or tool , they take priority — your block guarantees studio time, not guaranteed equipment access.

  • We currently fire to cone 06 for bisque and cone 5/6 for glaze firings.

  • No, but we have Laguna Specked Buff and will soon have New Mexico clay for purchase here!

    You are welcome to bring clay/glaze from another store, but keep in mind we BISQUE to cone 06 and GLAZE to cone 5-6.

    Lowfire clay or glaze (anything below cone 5 (which includes cone 018 to cone 4)) will melt and DESTROY our kiln shelves and kiln in the process. Please don’t do it!

    We do not have a place to store your personal clay between sessions. All personal clay, tools, or other items must be taken with you.

  • Everything made at Pip in an open studio session will be fired for no extra cost. Use of our glazes are included in your open studio time. Tools for community use are also included, but feel free to bring your own!

    That said, we are not set up to be a studio for production potters. If you are producing more work than we're able to fire, we'll let you know and point you to some other, local firing resources.

  • Open studio sessions are three hours long. Anything you need to do to your pieces —throwing, trimming, glazing, etc.—must be done within the 3 hour time frame. (In other words, we don‘t allow a quick trim or glaze outside of booked studio sessions.)

    Please be cleaned up and ready to go at the 3 hour mark.

House Rules

  • Discrimination of any kind is not permitted.

  • Do not touch anyone else's work.

  • Clay can not go down the sink.

  • Do not ‘dry-sand’ bisque or greenware inside the studio.

  • No production pottery making.

  • Clay Center is not responsible for loss, theft, or breakage of any kind.

  • You must clean up after yourself with a wet sponge or wet mop.

  • Nothing from the studio can be taken home.

  • Use headphones if you want to listen to your own thing.

  • Any cell phone usage must be taken outside the studio.

  • If you are not feeling well, please do not come to the studio. 

  • Help to conserve water - please do not let water run in sink! 

  • The studio is not responsible for pieces that break during the firing process or get thrown out if abandoned for more than 30 days.

  • For safety reasons, long hair should be tied back and jewelry removed.

  • No weapons allowed in studio.

  • Clay Center has the ability to revoke privileges at any time.

  • You must pick your work up within 30 days of us contacting you that your work is ready.
